The Coach

Two years, one method, no shortcuts.

Derick Zacharie, out of Texas. Group and Individual Shooting, Dribbling and Passing Clinics.

It started as a favor. A friend asked me to train his son, and I said yes the way you say yes to a friend — not because I was building anything.

I did not show up with a program. I showed up and watched. And what I found was not what his dad thought the problem was. Dad thought it was the jumper. It was not the jumper. The kid could not get to a spot he liked with any pressure on him, so every shot he took was a bad one, and then everybody blamed the shot.

So we worked the handle in tight space and the footwork getting into a shot. Which he did not want to do, and he told me so. Two weeks later his percentage moved and I had never run a shooting drill with him.

That is still the whole method. I train my clients with intense workouts, detailed and customed to the player’s abilities — not because it sounds premium, but because the customized part is the reason it worked the very first time I ever coached anybody.

I think about this business the way I think about an hour in the gym: inputs and outputs. A well-built session is an asset. Do enough of them and the returns compound — the athlete improves, a parent tells somebody, and you never have to talk anyone into anything. Word of mouth is the least forgiving marketing there is, and it is still how almost everybody finds me. I like it that way.

“My friend came and asked me to train his son. Son did well.”
